VADOC Releases Serving Middlesex
VADOC operates Virginia's state prison system and administers state probation and parole. It holds state-responsible prisoners and supervises Middlesex residents through Probation and Parole District 5 in Gloucester. That role does not establish a VADOC prison in Middlesex County. The only physical local jail identified in Middlesex is Middle Peninsula Regional Security Center.
A person can leave a VADOC institution by discharge or enter the community on parole or probation. Community supervision means physical incarceration ended but legal supervision continues. A detainer can instead send the person to another custodian. A state-responsible prisoner can also remain in a local or regional jail for part of a sentence, so movement off the MPRSC list may be a state transfer rather than release.
How to Confirm a VADOC Release
Begin with the VADOC Inmate & Supervisee Locator. Its scope is broader than a prison roster. It can include people in VADOC institutions, district-office supervisees, institutional hospitals, qualifying state-authority prisoners in local or regional jails, and Community Corrections Alternative Program placements.
- Search with the first three letters of the first name and the full last name, or use the seven-digit DOC ID.
- Accept the locator disclaimer and begin without optional filters so a move does not hide the right record.
- Compare the DOC number and identity details, then read status and location together.
- Distinguish an institution, local jail, CCAP, hospital, probation, or parole location.
- If the person is absent or the status is unclear, request limited public status and calculated-date facts from VADOC.
- Use release papers and the sentencing court to confirm full discharge or the basis for supervision.
The locator says it is updated daily and may contain stale or inaccurate data. No result is not proof of release. A person who has completed all custody and supervision may fall outside its current stated universe.
VADOC Locator Fields and Limits
Search inputs and date labels should be preserved exactly because they answer different questions. The DOC number is usually the best way to separate people with similar names. Location, race, gender, and age range are optional filters, not substitutes for identity checking.
| Field or label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| First-name letters and last name | Name route requiring the first three letters of the first name and full last name. |
| Seven-digit DOC ID | Preferred direct identifier for a VADOC record. |
| Location or status | May distinguish institutional custody from district-office community supervision. |
| Projected parole eligibility | A date when parole consideration may become possible, not a promised release. |
| Mandatory parole date | A VADOC calculation subject to final verification and legal changes. |
| Good-time release date | The date as calculated when the inquiry is made, which can change. |
Virginia does not use one universal projected-date label. VADOC Operating Procedure 050.1 identifies projected parole eligibility, mandatory parole, and good-time release dates as calculated at inquiry. An anticipated date remains prospective. A signed release record or confirmed actual status carries more weight.
VADOC Release Papers and Final Checks
The VADOC facility-release process describes documents signed when a person is discharged or paroled. Depending on the case, the packet may include a notification-of-release letter, Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole. Staff and the person sign and date applicable documents.
Before authorization, records staff verify the date in VACORIS and check unresolved warrants and detainers, court orders, uncalculated sentences, disciplinary action, and civil holds. A detainer changes the destination. It can produce a direct custody handoff even though the person has left a VADOC facility. For this reason, ask where custody went next, not only whether the prison stay ended.
VADOC states that the physical release occurs by 11:59 p.m. on the release date, barring emergencies. The process can include the person's property, funds, transportation plan, and signed directions. Those release papers are first-party evidence, but they are not automatically a public web record.
Middlesex VADOC Records Requests
For an absent or ambiguous locator result, seek the narrow status and date facts VADOC identifies as public rather than asking for an entire correctional case file. Useful items include custody or parole status, facility location, and the projected parole eligibility, mandatory parole, or good-time date calculated at the time of inquiry.
Virginia Code § 53.1-24 directs VADOC to preserve the judgment and a register of the term, offense, and receipt, subject to retention rules. OP 050.1 lists ten cents per page, actual postage or shipping, and reasonable actual labor when extra research is required. A former inmate seeking their own inactive record uses notarized form 050_F17. Some material may be exempt, so request segregable public portions and an estimate.

District 5 Supervision After Release
A locator record marked probation or parole places the person in community supervision rather than a prison cell. Middlesex state supervisees are served by VADOC Probation and Parole District 5 at 6270 Professional Drive, Gloucester, Virginia 23061, 804-695-1693. The office also serves Gloucester, Mathews, King and Queen, King William, and West Point.
District 5 is an office, not a public historical inmate archive. It may clarify routing or tell the person how to obtain their own supervision record, subject to law and office policy. Signed conditions, the court judgment, and a VADOC locator status should be read together. The separate District 5 system page covers this office's Middlesex role.
Parole Decisions Are Not Releases
The Virginia Parole Board decides parole for eligible state prisoners, while VADOC prepares records and administers supervision. Ordinary discretionary parole was abolished for most felonies committed on or after January 1, 1995, but older offenses and specified exceptions remain. A Board grant is a favorable decision, not the time the person walked out.
The Board publishes a live public-meeting calendar and completed monthly decision reports. A report can identify a grant or not-grant decision and review details. Final release still depends on VADOC preparation and detainer review. When reporting the sequence, preserve the decision date, the VADOC actual release date, and any supervision start as distinct events.
VADOC, MPRSC, and Federal Custody
Use custody origin to choose the system. MPRSC's current roster and its release or movement record control the local jail question. VADOC controls state incarceration and state supervision. BOP controls federal prison history, while ICE and USMS have separate limits. A missing result in one system does not justify searching or drawing a conclusion in another without a case, warrant, transfer, or detainer link.
If someone disappears from MPRSC and then appears at a VADOC institution, describe a transfer into state custody. If the state locator later shows probation or parole, describe release from incarceration to community supervision. If VADOC confirms full discharge, use that exact status. These careful scopes prevent a genuine database change from becoming a false claim about freedom from all custody.
VADOC Date Conflicts and Corrections
A state record can contain several valid dates. Parole eligibility marks a review point. A good-time or mandatory-parole date reflects a calculation. A Board grant begins release preparation. Actual departure completes the custody event. Report each label and its source instead of choosing whichever date looks most final.
When dates conflict, verify the DOC number, sentence, court order, location, and update date. VADOC lists pre-reception jail credit, sentence type, active time, credit level, discipline, and later legal events among calculation factors. The applicable credit system depends on the offense and sentence era.
OP 050.1 provides a correction route for erroneous VADOC material and requires recomputation when a correction changes time. Send enough identifiers and the disputed source to the Court and Legal Section. Do not independently recalculate a release date from a docket summary.
Virginia's credit rules resist a single percentage. Older Good Conduct Allowance categories differ from modern Earned Sentence Credits. Under § 53.1-202.3, listed subsection-A offenses can earn no more than 4.5 days for each thirty served, while other eligible offenses may earn at different levels. Classification, discipline, jail credit, and later court action can alter the date.
For a Middlesex person held at MPRSC under state authority, ask which agency computed the sentence and whether a DOC ID exists. A move from Saluda to a VADOC institution is a transfer within the state sentence, not a release to the community.
